Earliest meeting: Tuesday 18th January 1848
Final meeting: Tuesday 18th January 1848

The Oxfordshire parish of Deddington lies some 6 miles South of Banbury and once held its own race meeting in the mid-1800s. The parish can trace its history back to Anglo-Saxon times when it was known as Daeda. The Manor of Deddington was held by the step-brother of William the Conqueror, Odo, and he built Deddington Castle, although there is little evidence of the castle remaining today. The earliest race meeting consisted of a Match for 20 Sovereigns per side on Tuesday 18th January 1848 on the outskirts of Deddington between Mr T Austin’s Flatcatcher and Mr T Timms’s Go-Forget-Me. The selected course started half a mile from town on the left of the Banbury road and there was lively pre-race betting, with Flatcatcher being backed down from 2/1 to evens. However, he refused at the first fence and never made up the lost ground to hand Go-Forget-Me an easy win.
This racecourse is covered in Volume 1 of Racecourses Here Today and Gone Tomorrow. Ordering details shown below.
